A first online meeting with Antonio Cataldo, the artistic director of Fotogalleriet Oslo, marked the start of a training seminar conducted by him in the framework of the project The Photographic Image Between Past and Future. This session was dedicated to the discussion of curatorial practices devised by institutions which deal with the display and problematization of photography and images in a broader sense. Cataldo spoke about how he approached the institutional archive of Fotogalleriet, an organization which was founded in 1977, with the express purpose of showcasing photography in an artistic context. During his tenure he chose to critically revisit the history of this institution by looking at a variety of documents produced over time, in order to highlight the fact that photographic images cannot be divested from the ideological context in which they appear and circulate. The second session of this training is planned to take part this winter in Bucharest, if the latest developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic will allow Cataldo to make the trip.
The training sessions were attended by the project team comprised of Alexandra Croitoru, Magda Radu, Ștefan Sava, Adriana Dumitran, Calina Bârzu, and students from the Faculty of Art History and Theory (Luisa Huluba, Ana-Maria Ștefan) and the Photo-Video Department from the National University of Arts in Bucharest (Anastasia Lungu, Liviu Ralea, Ștefan Simion).
